Part 42: Episode 3, Day 1, Investigation: Old Pal

Part 42: Episode 3, Day 1, Investigation: Old Pal

Music: Silence

Okay, I guess we're not actually "inside" yet.

Sound: Light Bulb

An old friend is here to greet us, though! Sorry, an old "pal"!

Sound: Whack

Sound: Damage 2
Sound: Guilty

Sound: Whack

Good!

Sound: Whack

Haha he can't deal with his first ever loss!

Umm... so?

Sound: Whack

I don't know if it's because we're out in the woods or what, but instead of music I hear birds chirping after every line of dialogue here. It's rather strange.

Sound: Objection

Maya says: :pigoff:

Sound: Stab 2

...

...

...

Maya I think you broke him.

Sound: Realization

I think you hurt his feelings.

Oh no! I... I'm sorry!

Well, I think his feelings are easily hurt.

Speaking of which, how did that performance review go Gumshoe?

I can blame other people all I want, but I know the truth in my heart!

Sound: Light Bulb

Speaking of which, what are you doing here, Detective?

Sound: Whack

Hey!

Sound: Realization

Oh, just sightseeing, certainly not out to ruin another one of your cases...

Um, well...

Sound: Realization

Sound: Whack

That's MY endearing character trait!
Sound: Whack

I'd say he's a character alright...

I think we've gotten a little off track here.

Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal

Our favorite detective actually gets his own theme music, which we get to hear for the first time here.

Anyway, we'll start with looking around, as usual. Starting with this weird mess in front of us.

The studio mascot.

I guess it's a monkey of some kind.

But what kind of monkey has a nose like that?

He's holding a sign in his hand.

[Right: To Studio One Left: To Studio Two]

Sound: Light Bulb

It took that tree down with it, too.

The wind, right...

There's a big welcome sign above the path.

Yeah, apparently the studio's fallen on tough times.

They make a bit of extra money by charging for admission.

Don't most studios do that? I remember taking a studio tour in LA a long time ago and seeing a bunch of extras from "Angels and Demons" in cardinal robes hanging out and smoking in an alley.

You know, you could always quit being a detective and work here?

Yeah! And what perfect timing, with the studio mascot down for the count.

Sound: Whack

Oh leave the poor guy alone, you're just bullying him now.

I bet this camera will cause us problems.

Hey, there's a camera here.

All you have to do is look at the data and you can see who went where!

There's a number plate on the camera... [ST1-307].

That must be the camera ID number.

I'm a little bushed. Maybe I'll take a short rest here.

Sound: Light Bulb

Sound: Whack

W-well, yeah, but...

We can chat with him just as easily sitting down, what's the big deal?

Detective Gumshoe, what's down the path to the left?

It looks like a tree fell down over the path...?

There's nothing down there, anyway.

That's where Studio Two used to be, they tell me.

They don't use it now, though.

Well there's our destination - Studio One, the scene of the crime.

The entrance to Studio One.

This is the studio where they found Jack Hammer's body.

...

Sound: Realization

Looks like you need a cardkey to get in.

Wait a minute. Did the old bag security lady let us go down here knowing we'd be locked out anyway? That sneaky witch!

Time to remind Gumshoe of who are are again.

Uh huh?

Real men show their P.D. badge and that's that!

Hmm... I'm not so sure about that.

:D I'm sure the first thing people will think when they see Phoenix wearing a giant "L" is "Lawyer". Our badge hasn't really been useful yet but at least it's giving us some unique dialogue this time around!

The map just prompts a "don't care" reaction:

Um, Detective. Any ideas about this?

Fair enough. Although you are just standing there waiting for us to move on for as long as we want.

Let's see if we can pick the detective's brain a bit.

So how is your investigation going, Detective?

Sound: Light Bulb

Nick...

Right. So, Detective, mind if I take a look at what you got?

Sound: Realization

The autopsy report! The latest version, if you please...

Hmm... right, right.

I still maintain Edgeworth made up that new autopsy report on the spot, so don't you worry about it Gumshoe.

Sound: Select Jingle

Nothing real useful there yet. We just still don't know enough about what happened.

Got any more for us on this topic?

So how is your investigation going, Detective?

Sound: Light Bulb

You'll hear all you need to know in court!

(Oh well, it was worth a try.)

So there must be a reason our client was arrested so quickly. What do you have on him, detective?

Why was Mr. Powers arrested?

Simple, pal!

The murder took place right over there in Studio One.

At that time, there was no one other than the victim in the studio.

According to the autopsy report, the time of death was 2:30 PM.

Only one person went to the studio between 1:00 and 2:30!

Sound: Realization

No one else, pal!

If you think I'm lying, ask the security lady at the main gate.

Nick! If that's true...!

Sound: Realization

Relax, Maya, proving witnesses wrong is what we do. I'm still betting that she only saw someone in the costume, and can't prove who was in it, but it might take some time for us to get there.

Thanks for cheering me up...

Speaking of the security lady...

About the security lady...

Oh, that sweet old lady. What a charmer!

Sound: Light Bulb

We must have the wrong badge, she didn't like ours at all.

She even gave me a piece of valuable evidence!

Bah she didn't give us anything. Well, I guess we stole a map from her.

Sound: Stab

Very well, detective, show us this evidence!

What kind of evidence?
Sound: Whack

Well, that, er, photo.
Sound: Realization

Sound: Whack

What!
Sound: Objection

Who took that!?
Sound: Whack

See the camera up on that gate, pal?

The gate? You mean the one with the welcome sign?

Music: Silence

Sound: Damage 2

Nick, he has evidence! We're finished!

Couldn't someone just walk around that camera off the path? Also, it seems like someone could have been hiding in the abandoned Studio Two.

Music: Dick Gumshoe - Detective Gumshoe, Pal

...

Once we've hit all the topics, we get a new scene:

Don't look so happy when you say that.

Didn't you just say he didn't look happy?

Sound: Whack

Umm...

Sure thing, pal.
Sound: Light Bulb

Go wherever you like.

Sound: Whack

(I'm glad someone around here seems to be enjoying themselves.)

Nick, let's go!

Despite apparently having free rein of the place, the gate to Studio One is still locked and we can't get in. Maybe we can get the security lady to help us now that we have the detective's blessing.

Music: Silence

Sound: Light Bulb

That security lady is in the guard station stuffing her face with donuts!

I guess all cops like their donuts!

Who doesn't?

Sound: Realization

Oops, busted!

Music: Investigation - Opening

Well? Are you satisfied Powers is guilty yet?

(Urk!)

What, you expect her to withhold evidence from the detective? That's just life as a defense attorney, not "making your life harder", sheesh.

Looks like we have the pleasure of further conversation with the old bag.

Why didn't you tell us about the security photo, ma'am?

Hmm? Oh, that?

Can't argue with that logic, Gumshoe scenes are always great.

These things are important, you know.

Yeah, we saw.

It's my job to check the photos every day, you see.

Some of these seem like repeats, but maybe she has more to say now.

This guard station is in a central position.

Now poor Hammer, he went to the studio just before 1:00.

The murder happened right around 2:30, see?

The security camera got a good look at him too.

Sound: Realization

Maybe... it was you?

Sound: Damage 2

(She thinks I was joking.)

As annoying as she is, I'm not really reading killer from her. I guess we'll see.

Was the victim, Mr. Hammer, a popular actor?

("Was"? Past tense?)

Sound: Light Bulb

That too, yes.

He shone the brightest! Back in the day.

Hammer took it pretty hard, and who can blame him?

There has to be a story behind Hammer's career downturn in here somewhere.

About the security camera...

Oh yes, the camera.

Then it snaps a photo!

But I don't bother myself with those details.

I check 'em every day before going home, I do.

Hmm, maybe there's something there with the photo timestamp being tampered with? Or someone messed with the computer before Oldbag got around to looking at the photos?

Well, those conversations weren't all that productive. Time to play the "show everyone our new evidence" game! Gumshoe and Oldbag don't care about it, how about the others?

Music: Silence

Sound: Whack

Powers said he was sleeping in his dressing room!

But first, Maya apparently needs to be talked off a ledge.

Sound: Whack

Don't look at me! How should I know?

Music: Maya Fey ~ Turnabout Sisters Theme

Maya doesn't actually care about the autopsy report either, but we can talk to her some more.

What do you think?

Well, that's hard to say, without seeing the actual photo ourselves.

But if it is Powers in that photo, his alibi is shot.

And there's a photograph to prove it.

Assuming we trust that the camera actually catches everyone that goes by, and no one was hiding in Studio Two for awhile or something, sure.

What do we do, Nick?

Let's take a look.

Maybe that security lady missed someone?

We'll get back there in a second.

Music: Silence

First let's see what our client is up to.

...

Hmm... right.

Sound: Light Bulb

I'm not sure why a flashback was necessary there.

Oh well. Let's try again later.

Before we go, let's poke at this guy again.

This guard monitors the visitor's room.

He must get pretty bored.

So, where to from here? It's easy to miss, but....

We actually have a new location, only accessible from the studio's main gate. So next time we'll dig around in the employee area!
